Why Are We So Afraid of Testosterone?

There’s a tremendous amount of information out there on testosterone these days.  Even a cursory internet search and you can find yourself down a rabbit hole full of benefits, risks, legality, muscle men, prostate cancer, athlete abuse, and ambulance chasing lawyers.  It can quickly become so complicated that you may just sigh and walk away. So I’d like to address some of your questions and hopefully bring you to a better understanding of this remarkable hormone. But one thing first. I’m biased. I’m biased because I’ve been practicing Age Management and Hormonal Optimization for over 10 years.  I know the research.  The real research.  I have also seen testosterone transform lives when responsibly and appropriately prescribed.  It’s the reason I love what I do and why I want to share some of what I know with you. Here are some of the questions people frequently ask me: Why should I care about testosterone? Testosterone is a crucial hormone in how your body functions.  For most of us, the amount of testosterone our body produces starts to decrease around the age of 30. This poor hormone has gotten a bad reputation over time due to abuse & overuse in professional sports … Read More

If Your Doctor Tells You You’re Normal, Say “That’s Not Good Enough!”

Do you want to be “NORMAL” or do you want to be: OPTIMAL? VIGOROUS? AMAZING? UNFORGETTABLE? I know what the answer is for me. And I bet it’s the same answer for you. One of the most frequent questions I get from clients is “I went to see my regular doctor and he told me my hormone levels are normal.  We checked everything and he said everything is fine.  So why do I feel so lousy? Why am I so tired? Why is my sleep so poor? Why is my sex drive lower than it used to be? Why does my recovery from exercise take so long? Why am I so irritable?” Well, the answer to this depends on what you define as normal. How is “normal” defined? In general, most doctors consider normal levels to be those ranges revealed in a blood test that the lab designates to a certain hormone. For example, if you’re getting your testosterone levels tested, a normal total testosterone value is often used. The “normal” range for testosterone is roughly between 300 to 1200 ng/dL (nanograms per deciliter). If you fall anywhere in this range, you’re told your level is normal. Here’s where the … Read More

We all age. It’s part of life. But most of us hope that as we age, we can maintain the highest quality of life possible. That we can keep as much of the energy, strength, and and appearance we enjoy in youth.  At the same time, most of us hope to be spared the impairment that comes with chronic, degenerative diseases.  Hormones are key players in our ability to feel and look young – as well as stave off the degenerative diseases of aging. You see, as we age, hormone levels change. Typically, the hormones we like at high levels – fat burning, energy producing hormones – will fall.  And the hormones we like at low levels – fat storing, energy depleting hormones – tend to rise.  With this change, we look and feel older. Hormones often fall into a deficiency range, below the levels associated with the best health outcomes.  This is when intervention with hormone optimization (through diet, the right amount and kind of exercise, sleep, lifestyle modifications, and hormone supplementation) can be extremely beneficial. Human Growth Hormone (HGH) is one of these hormones.  Unfortunately, it isn’t available to everyone who needs it, largely due to its price … Read More

Leptin: The New Big Boss in Town

There’s a new kid on the hormone block and he’s kind of a big deal. Even though we’ve only known about him for a very short while, he’s actually been controlling things behind the scenes this whole time. The hormone we’re talking about is leptin. Discovered in 1994, leptin is the major hormone that ultimately influences all other hormones in our body, and virtually controls all functions of the hypothalamus – the organ previously considered the grand master in charge of our hormonal output. Leptin’s primary job is to tell the hypothalamus that you’ve got enough energy stored in your fat stores, and thus don’t need to eat or store more of it. It’s a close relation to insulin, your fat storage hormone, and the two are constantly in a dance together. As such, leptin coordinates our hormonal, metabolic, and behavioral responses to starvation. Even though we’re not consciously aware of it, leptin is telling us how much to eat, how much of what we just ate to store as body fat, and how much to move or not move our bodies. It profoundly affects our emotions, cravings, and behavior and it … Read More

Why Can’t I Ever Seem to Keep the Weight Off When I Diet?

Dieting. It works! Well…sort of. You’ve tried dieting.  It works most of the time. Restrict what you’re eating and you’ll usually lose weight. Sometimes very quickly. Juice cleanse du jour, Master Cleanse, The Biggest Loser, Fat Flush, The Zone, Atkins, Weight Watchers, Sugar Busters, South Beach, High Fat/Low Carb, Mediterranean. The list goes on.  They could open a bookstore devoted to diet books alone there have been so many. And the truth is, most of them DO work. Short-term. But as time goes on, dieting becomes more difficult.  The same diet you did a few years ago doesn’t work as well the second, or third, or fourth go-around.  Or even if you’re not “dieting,” maybe you’re eating better than you ever have before. And you’re exercising more frequently and with more intensity than ever. Then why is it you CAN’T SEEM TO KEEP THE WEIGHT OFF? Well there’s a very good explanation. And it has to do with hormones. You see, hormones play a large part in how your body responds physically as you grow older. As you age, your body produces less of the fat burning, energy producing hormones like thyroid, testosterone, estrogen, DHEA and growth hormones and tends … Read More

Melatonin: The Sleep Hormone (and So Much More!)

Do you wish you could sleep more soundly and feel more rested? Sleep disturbances and insomnia are frequent complaints I hear about from my patients.  So I though it would be useful to talk about a hormone that most people are deficient in as they age and can have a profound effect on quality and quantity of sleep: melatonin. You may already be thinking, “Yeah, yeah, I tried melatonin. It didn’t work for me.” Or, “Melatonin gave me nightmares.”  Or, “Melatonin doesn’t work as well as Ambien.”  My clinical experience has shown me that melatonin, when used correctly, is extremely effective. There is evidence that melatonin may have a role in the biologic regulation of not only circadian rhythms and sleep but also mood, reproduction, tumor growth, and aging. But first, we need to talk about the small gland in the center of the brain that produces melatonin. Melatonin, which is a hormone, is secreted by the pineal gland, a small gland located in the center of the brain.  Three centuries ago, the French philosopher René Descartes described the pineal gland as “the seat of the soul.”  The pineal gland controls energy production and usage in the body through the effects … Read More
