Los Angeles Magazine and Professional Research Services conducted an exclusive peer-review survey to determine the doctors deemed the best in their field of practice by their colleagues. We were selected in their first annual, peer-review survey sent to certified doctors within Los Angeles County and I couldn’t be more proud and excited. Los Angeles’ Top Doctors are chosen through a rigorous process conducted by PRS (Professional Research Services), which includes voting by professional medical colleagues. That is the sole criteria for inclusion in the Top Doctors listing.  Listings cannot be bought, and advertising has no impact on the review process. The special recognition will appear in the April 2018 issue of Los Angeles Magazine. Both Dr. Stocker and I use The Carragher Method™, a healthy aging plan that I developed for patients for patients which includes cutting-edge hormone optimization protocols, Intelligent Physical Fitness to optimize fat loss and hormone utilization, a specific eating plan which is not a diet but an approach to nutrition which is both sustainable and geared toward supporting their hormones. The Carragher Method™ also incorporates lifestyle support in the areas of sleep and stress management. To book an evaluation with either myself or Dr. Stocker, please call Aaron Epstein, … Read More

Human Growth Hormone: Believe the Hype Human Growth Hormone (HGH) has been celebrated by many as the holy grail of hormones, because it’s the most overarching in its benefits.  HGH has been shown to increase lean muscle mass, decrease body fat, stimulate collagen production and increase skin thickness, improve bone strength, and more. And it’s still gaining in popularity, as talk of its use continues by high-profile celebrities, athletes, the Beverly Hills crowd, and others who covet it to maintain youth, beauty, and a higher quality of life and health. My practice is next to Beverly Hills, so I hear about it on supermarket lines, at the gym, and at cocktail parties. This is a rare instance where I’ll tell you to believe the hype: The bottom line is, HGH works. And I know first-hand, because I prescribe it in my practice. In my experience, it’s one of the safest medications on the market. Especially at the low doses needed to obtain benefit from it. At these dosages, it has very few side effects. In my nearly 15 years of prescribing it, I’ve never had a patient who’s experienced more than a mild side effect that couldn’t be eliminated with … Read More

The Top 10 Testosterone Myths  Part 2: The Big 5 When I tell patients at The Body Well, my Los Angeles clinic, I want them to be on testosterone, I get a lot of what I call “broscience” or “Dr. Carragher, but I heard…” responses. You know, the kind of pop science stuff that travels by word of mouth and is asserted in glossy magazines with lots of certainty but not much research. “You want me to take testosterone? But I heard…” Worse yet, many of these myths are propagated by physicians themselves! To dispel these prominent myths, I’ve collected the top ten in this counterpoint countdown. If you missed Myths 10 through 6, you can click here to check them out! And now, without further adieu, here are the Top 5 testosterone myths! 5 Myth: Taking testosterone causes heart disease. Fact: The overwhelming majority of studies show that supplementing with testosterone is beneficial for your heart. This is a myth that has received a lot of attention because for some reason, the general public hears of one study (usually the most recent) and tends to latch onto it as the credible source. It’s true that there have been some … Read More

Human Growth Hormone (HGH) Replacement is Still on the Rise in Los Angeles

Mike CarragherAge Management, Dr. Carragher, Hormone Optimization, Human Growth Hormone, The Body Well, UncategorizedLeave a Comment

As a physician specializing in hormone replacement, I am asked frequently about Human Growth Hormone (HGH).   There is a certain fascination with Human Growth Hormone (HGH) with people who live in or around Los Angeles, partially because of its popularity with celebrities, but also because of our city’s obsession with staying young and vibrant.  A large number of people from Los Angeles are interested in anti-aging in general, whether it’s Human Growth Hormone or other interventions that help us look and feel younger. Human Growth Hormone is a vital component of the human endocrine system. It is secreted by the pituitary gland, a small gland located at the base of the brain that produces several hormones. In childhood and adolescence this hormone is necessary to promote growth in height. In adulthood, its presence leads to a healthier body composition and is responsible for such important jobs such as: Keeping your body lean Decreasing fat accumulation Stimulating collagen production and increasing skin thickness Strengthening your bones Protecting your organs from the decline that occurs with age Promoting more rapid hair and nail growth Improving circulation Giving a more favorable cholesterol profile Helping protect you from the consequences of aging Unfortunately, natural … Read More

So your New Year’s Resolutions were a flop. Here you are, it’s the beginning of February, and they’re out the window. Probably for a few weeks already. You know the story. December 31st is filled with ideas of how to change yourself in the coming year: lose that extra 10 pounds, start a new exercise program, eat better, start a new project or job, take up a hobby, find a new relationship (or improve the one you’re in). And the list goes on. So why is it that it’s first week of February and once again your resolutions have gone by the wayside? Or worse yet, why is it that you’re actually trying but still not getting the results you hoped for? I have the answer. And I bet you haven’t thought of it. What if the answer isn’t that you lack willpower? Most people have more willpower than they even realize. What if the answer isn’t that you’re lazy? I kind of doubt you are. I’m going to suggest an answer that you probably haven’t considered. It’s a problem that you may not even know is a problem, but once solved is a game changer in every area of … Read More

I was recently asked to be interviewed by the incomparable Suzanne Somers on the benefits of Bio-identical Hormone Replacement Therapy (BHRT) in men.  Suzanne has done so much to educate women on the benefits of BHRT in women.  But men also suffer from declining hormone levels as they age, and testosterone is usually not the only hormone that needs to be replaced! Men are also frequently told that their hormone levels are “normal” by their physicians, who are all to often unaware that it’s not just a lab number that indicates hormone deficiency or need for replacement. Watch this great interview and learn about the effects that declining hormone levels have in men and what you can do about it. Five Testosterone-Boosting Foods!

The 5 Best Foods To Boost Your Testosterone Guest blog by René von Gunten, Nutritional Therapy Practitioner at The Body Well If you want to optimize your testosterone levels, there’s an easy option available to everyone: Make sure your diet is supporting you! Providing your body with the right nutrients and cofactors to support and stimulate testosterone production is simple enough. Here are five easy-to-find foods that can help: 1. Salmon Salmon has a high Vitamin D content, one of the highest of all foods, in fact. Most other fish don’t even come close! Optimal Vitamin D levels are strongly correlated with optimal testosterone levels in several studies. You don’t have to eat salmon every day, but have a single portion regularly, once a week. And be sure to eat wild- or line-caught salmon, not farmed. Salmon in the wild are exposed to sunlight regularly, so D levels are much higher. 2. Oysters Oysters are one of the healthiest foods on the planet. They’re a raw food, an organ meat, and they’re nutrient dense. They also have high mineral content; I call them the multi-mineral of the natural world. One mineral found in abundance in oysters is zinc, which, has been shown in several studies to increase testosterone production. On top of … Read More

I Can’t Get Rid of Fat from My Midsection No Matter How Hard I Try! What’s the Missing Piece?

The spare tire, the muffin top, unlovable handles: you’ve heard all the horrible names for those pudgy pinch-able inches that are often the most stubborn to get rid of. In fact midsection weight-gain is one of the most common complaints I get from patients. Often someone tells me they’re trying harder than ever with their workouts, killing themselves doing abs, and eating a “cleaner” diet, but none of it seems to be working. They’re doing two or three times the work they did in their teens and twenties, with diminishing results. This extra-work-for-less-payoff is a huge clue that belly fat is being caused by an overlooked factor: Hormonal imbalance. Hormones and Aging Some of this is an effect of aging. As we get into our late twenties and early thirties, many of our fat-burning hormone levels — including levels of testosterone, DHEA, growth hormone, and thyroid hormone — start falling. In addition, the hormones we like nice and low, the fat-storing hormones — including insulin and cortisol — start going up. Because people often don’t associate hormone levels with weight gain, they employ all sorts of unsuccessful strategies to solve the problem. They start dieting or doing juice cleanses. They’ll … Read More
